PHASE 2 – The Architect of Style

Before graffiti had a fixed visual vocabulary, PHASE 2 was helping invent one. Michael Lawrence Marrow emerged from the Bronx in the early 1970s and became one of the writers most closely associated with the rapid evolution from simple names to increasingly sophisticated pieces.

Early years

PHASE 2 began writing during the formative New York period when subway and street graffiti was expanding quickly across the city. Writers were competing not only for visibility but for new ways to make a name larger, more distinctive and harder to ignore. PHASE 2 became known as one of the culture’s most important experimenters.

The softie

He is widely credited with developing and popularizing the rounded letter style often called the softie, a major step in the evolution of what later became known as bubble lettering. The importance was not simply the rounded shape. PHASE 2 treated letters as flexible forms that could expand, overlap and develop their own internal rhythm.

Building a language

His influence extended into arrows, connections, extensions and increasingly complex letter structures. Many devices that became normal parts of graffiti style were still new territory when writers like PHASE 2 were experimenting with them. He also helped develop the terminology writers used to describe their own work, strengthening graffiti as a culture with its own internal language rather than something defined entirely from outside.

Beyond trains

PHASE 2 remained connected to hip-hop culture through design, flyers, illustration and publishing as the movement developed beyond the subway. His work kept a strong emphasis on lettering and graphic structure even as graffiti entered galleries and travelled internationally.

Legacy

PHASE 2 died in 2019, but many of the ideas associated with his generation are now so deeply embedded in graffiti that they can feel anonymous. That is part of his importance. He belongs to the small group of early writers whose experiments became basic tools for everyone who followed.

To study PHASE 2 is to look at graffiti while its alphabet was still being written.
