A large hand-painted advertisement for Grand Theft Auto VI in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has been covered in part by graffiti less than a month after its completion.

The mural, located at the corner of Wythe Avenue and North 11th Street, was painted by Colossal Media as part of the promotional campaign for Rockstar Games' upcoming title. Completed around October 10, 2026, after seven days of work, it reproduced an image of the game's two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, against a backdrop of palm trees, with Rockstar branding and promotional lettering.

A new name across the wall

By early November, a large black-and-white inscription reading “JELOUS” had appeared across the lower section of the advertisement. It covered parts of the characters and the composition, while much of the upper artwork remained visible.

Photographs were shared on November 5 by the Instagram account @jelous.ktd and subsequently circulated on gaming and graffiti pages. The account is associated with the name on the wall, though published reports have not independently confirmed who physically painted the graffiti.

Seven days of painting, less than a month on display

Colossal Media specializes in hand-painted large-scale outdoor advertisements. Unlike a printed billboard, the Brooklyn campaign was executed directly on the building facade by painters working over several days. The visible intervention arrived less than a month after the mural was completed.

The images prompted criticism from fans who saw the work involved in producing the advertisement as a reason it should have been left untouched. Other reactions focused on the fact that, despite the painting technique, the image was still a commercial advertisement in a public-facing urban space.

Graffiti, advertising and the street

The incident brings two different ways of using the same wall into direct contact. One is a commissioned promotional image, carefully planned and executed for a major entertainment release. The other is an unauthorized name placed across it, in a city where graffiti writing has a history extending back decades.

The distinction between a painted advertisement and graffiti is not only visual. It also involves permission, ownership, visibility and who gets to occupy prominent space in the city. The Brooklyn wall now displays both forms at once.

As of November 6, there has been no confirmed public announcement about whether the mural will be restored or replaced.
